Day of energy drinks: How to prepare a healthier home party?
Thursday, August 15, is declared as the international day of energy drinks, although their producers do not have much reason to celebrate. Slovak legislators are also considering limiting the sale of beverages to minors, as well as their advertising. More and more sports enthusiasts are therefore looking for healthier alternatives to sugary and generally not very healthy "energy drinks".

The International Day of Energy Drinks has been celebrated for the last ten years, although it is more a marketing activity of their producers. The most famous is without a doubt the Austrian Red Bull, which its creator Dietrich Mateschitz launched on the market in 1987 according to a popular Thai recipe. Today, Red Bull is synonymous with a brand that supports extreme sports, such as formula, aerobatic flying or freestyle skiing. The area of the seventh hangar of the Salzburg airport, where not only the company headquarters, but also the company museum is located, is dedicated to the performance of the athletes in the silver and red jersey.

Aggressive marketing of aggressive drinks?
However, Red Bull's sponsorship efforts are not always acknowledged with gratitude, for example fans of the Salzburg soccer team Austria complained about the aggressive approach of its marketing, which after the new sponsor renamed and changed the traditional colours of the jerseys. Although Red Bull is the most famous energy drink in the world (in 2022, the value of the Red Bull brand was calculated at almost seventeen billion euros, which makes it by far the most valuable Austrian brand), but the global prospects of the entire segment of energy drinks are not very encouraging.
Since the beginning of this year, the sale of energy drinks to minors under the age of eighteen is prohibited in Poland, in all vending machines and on school grounds, under the threat of a fine or even imprisonment. The same ban has been in place since 2014 in neighbouring Lithuania. Most of the European countries are currently limiting the promotion of energy drinks.
In the United States, some chains are trying to avoid the banby self-regulating and prohibiting the sale of beverages to children with more than 180 milligrams of caffeine per pack. The debate was fuelled by the launch of the Prime drink, marketed by YouTube influencers Paul Logan and KSI, showing 200 milligrams of caffeine per twelve ounces of the drink, which is more than six cans of Coca-Cola or two Red Bulls. Slovak MPs are intensively considering a possible ban on the sale of energy drinks to minors or its limitation.
A healthy alternative in your kitchen
In addition to the high content of sugar, caffeine and other stimulants such as taurine, energy drinks also have a bad effect on tooth enamel. Therefore, experts recommend rinsing immediately after consuming them mouth with water, but this does not apply to acidic foods and drinks, when the enamel is most vulnerable. Energy drinks are not a suitable drink even in the current heat wave, because they have a dehydrating effect due to their caffeine and sugar content.
